My cat Leo was born in someone’s backyard inside a drainpipe along with his fellow brothers and sisters, all abandoned by their mother. The owner of the house contacted the rescue team to remove the kittens. The cute colorful cats were quickly adopted, but the three black cats were left behind. After some time, two of the black cats were rehomed except for Leo who was 5 months old (quite old for cats to get adopted). I agreed to adopt Leo and completed the necessary paperwork and even sent a video of my home to show that the environment Leo would be living in would be safe and healthy for him. He was not released for adoption until the day after Halloween, for his protection, because black cats are prone to cruel rituals on that day. I was happy to adopt Leo, who was neglected twice: by his mother and again by humans until he was fostered and adopted. I am so happy to have him a part of my family!

COST OF CARE

Being a new cat owner, I was under the misconception that cats are okay being left alone, even for a week. So before my trip, I prepped food, water, and litter for my cat and I hid treats and toys around the room that he could discover to keep him occupied. However, during the week, the stress, loneliness, and/or boredom led him to ingest many inedible items in the room that blocked his intestines. I came home from my trip shocked to see him near death. Crying, I quickly rushed him to the nearest vet where they recommended urgent surgery that would cost me between $6000-7000.00.  Since I had just moved and could not afford the surgery, I was referred to another vet in another state who would be able to do the same surgery for a lesser amount.  It enlightened me to see how caring people are for animals’ lives. I am appreciative of the veterinarian by my house for giving me another option and I am also appreciative for the more distant veterinarian who was able to help my cat while helping me as well.  That is why I appreciate the vision for Hope for All Paws to cross borders and assist with more affordable medical costs.
